How to design and organize your own custom closet

So you have made the decision to organize your cluttered closet but where do you start? Creating a custom closet design does not have to be expensive. Whether you have a walk in closet or a small closet you will be using the same principles to get organized and create a custom closet that is both functional and stylish.

Closet Organizing

Organizing your closet can be done in small steps, maybe set aside a time of window each week and start purging your closet, left to right or top to bottom. You will be creating three categories. This is the first and most important step! The categories will be items that you are keeping, items that you are donating and items that you will dispose of.

Try to move as many large items such as vacuums and suitcases to a different closet or space in the house. If you have not worn items in over a year remove those too. We tend to avoid items that don’t fit us well or we don’t like the color on us. Remove any damaged items. This first step will leave you with fewer items to store and more space to store what is left. Items such as shoes can consume a lot of space so if possible move those to a different closet or to a cupboard in the garage.

Now take a good look at your empty closet. Make a note of existing storage possibilities and all the empty space! You can create a sketch to help you if you like. We will want to use all the available space from top to bottom as well as any empty wall space. Aside from your items you have just kept also consider what else you may want to include in your closet. You may want a mirror, a bench, or an ironing board for example.

Move any existing dressers or unused furniture from your bedroom or around the house into empty spaces such as under where the clothes will be hanging. Move any existing bins or boxes you are not using into the closet for storage. Consider hanging hooks, adding shelves and pegboards to empty walls. This will give you several storage options; hanging, bins, drawers, open shelves, pegboards. Use any empty bags you already have in the closet for storage too.

Group your closet items

Organize all the items you have kept into groups that make sense to you. We all have different inventory and different ways of organizing but the way you decide to categorize, is what will make it a custom closet design for you!

Next, decide which grouped items will go where. This is also a personal preference, but you should aim to put things in such a way that you can return them to their intended spot easily at the end of the day. If perfect folding does not come easily to you, decide on what works for you, there is no right or wrong. Store all items that you use regularly at eye level. Store seasonal and lesser used items on higher shelves or closer to the ground. Label closed bins for easier identification and ease of use.

Be selective while purchasing new items

Be creative and only purchase new storage options after you have used what you already have lying around. If you have a collection such as ties you may want to add a drapery rod to a wall to hang them. You may add a pegboard to a spare wall for jewelry. Used book shelves are good options for shoes if you do not have shoe racks for example.

Enjoy your new custom closet whether it’s a small closet or a walk in closet! To maintain your new custom closet design, make an effort to return items to their intended spot at the end of the day, and consider removing an older item from your closet when you buy a new item.
